2022 Outstand Youth Award

Dept. 10 - York State Fair Outstanding Youth Award

The York State Fair offers the York State Fair Outstanding Youth Award to an Outstanding 4-H and/or FFA member in York County. The Outstanding Youth Award recipient will receive $2000.00 after the completion of the 2022 York State Fair. The York State Fair’s Outstanding Youth Award recipient should be present at the 2022 York State Fair ribbon cutting ceremony and be available at other times during the fair and during the 2022/2023 school year.

All applicants must be a 4-H and/or FFA member of good standing, enrolled in the York County 4-H Program and/or an active member listed on the current FFA Roster of a chartered FFA Chapter in York County. All applicants must have exhibited at the York State Fair and must be 16-18 years old as of January 1st, 2022. All applicants will participate in an interview process in front of a panel of judges.

Applicants must submit the York State Fair Outstanding Youth Award application postmarked by May 23rd, 2022 to York State Fair Attn: YSF Outstanding Youth Award 334 Carlisle Avenue, York, PA 17404.

Shelby Smeltzer graduated from Red Lion Area Senior High School in 2021. While in high school she participated in many in-school and out-of-school activities and organizations which include; The Red Lion Area FFA Chapter, Southern Kids 4-H Goat Club, The York County Dairy Princess Program, Red Lion High School Softball Program, and Red Lion Rec Softball. Throughout her FFA career she received these degrees; Greenhand Degree, Chapter Degree, White Rose Degree, and Keystone State Degree.

Shelby held a few offices and titles in some of the organizations that she was in through the years. She served as the Vice President and President for 2 years for the Southern Kids 4-H Goat Club, was her FFA chapter’s Sentinel for the 2018-2019 school year, President for the 2019-2020 school year, and the 2020-2021 school year as well. She has also held many titles within The York County Dairy Princess Program; Dairy Miss, Dairy Maid, and currently a Dairy Ambassador.

Over the course of her high school career, she went on many trips with FFA where she participated in many competitions some of which were held during the York State Fair, as well as traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana for the National FFA Convention in the fall of 2018 and 2019. And now that she has her Keystone State Degree she is going to be working towards getting her American Degree which is the highest degree anyone can achieve in the National FFA Organization.

Shelby will be attending Penn State University to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education and Extension to become an Agriculture Teacher in the state of Pennsylvania.

Shelby not only has been in competition for FFA at the York State Fair, she has also shown and sold many goats throughout the years. Her favorite was getting to talk to her sponsors and buyers that would come to the shows and sales because it meant a lot to her and she is very appreciative for all of them helping her.
